Size and appearance
The blank margin (quiet zone) is never smaller than 10 times the bar width, so the barcode stays scannable.
Choose a format and see what it accepts
Every format has its own rules. The generator checks them for you and tells you in plain words if something's wrong.
| Format | What you can enter | Check digit |
|---|---|---|
| Code 128 | Letters, digits and symbols (ASCII 32–126), up to 80 characters | Built in, automatic |
| EAN-13 | 12 digits, or 13 with check digit | Calculated or verified |
| EAN-8 | 7 digits, or 8 with check digit | Calculated or verified |
| UPC-A | 11 digits, or 12 with check digit | Calculated or verified |
| UPC-E | 6, 7 or 8 digits (compressed form) | Calculated or verified |
| Code 39 | Capital letters, digits, space and - . $ / + %, up to 40 characters | Not required |
| ITF-14 | 13 digits, or 14 with check digit | Calculated or verified |
Using the size options
Bar width is the width of the thinnest bar. Wider bars are easier for scanners and cope better with a blurry print.
Height is how tall the bars are. Taller bars are easier to scan at an angle.
Margin is the blank space around the barcode. Every barcode needs a clear “quiet zone” on both sides, so the generator won't let the margin drop below ten times the bar width.
Show the value prints the number under the bars, handy when a barcode won't scan and somebody has to type it in.
Printing tips
- Print at 100% scale. Turn off “fit to page” or “shrink to fit” in the print dialog.
- Use black bars on a white or very light background. Avoid coloured or glossy backgrounds.
- Keep the blank space on both sides of the bars clear of text and artwork.
- Print a test label and scan it with the same scanner or phone app that will be used in practice.
- For professional printing or large labels, download the SVG so the bars stay crisp at any size.
About product numbers and GS1
This site creates barcode images. It does not issue or register product numbers. Retailers and online marketplaces generally expect the GTIN, UPC or EAN on a product to be issued to your business by GS1, the standards organisation that manages these numbers, through its local member organisation. If you plan to sell products through retailers, obtain your numbers from GS1 first and then enter them here to create the barcode artwork. For testing, training, mock-ups and internal use, any correctly formed number will do.
Need a QR code instead?
Barcodes are best for product numbers, stock and shipping labels. If you want people to open a web page, join a Wi-Fi network or save your contact details from their phone, use the QR code generator. You can also jump straight to URL QR codes or Wi-Fi QR codes.
Questions about the generator
Why won't my printed barcode scan?
The most common causes are a barcode printed too small, too little blank space around it, low contrast, or a page scaled to fit. Print at 100% scale, use black bars on a white background, keep the margin generous and increase the bar width setting.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
Choose SVG for printing and design software, because it is a vector format that stays sharp at any size. Choose PNG for documents, web pages and apps that need an ordinary image file. The PNG is exported at a high resolution.
What size should I print the barcode?
As large as your label allows. Retail EAN and UPC barcodes are normally printed between 80% and 200% of their nominal size, and bigger bars are easier to scan. Always test a printed sample with the scanner you will actually use.
Can I use lower-case letters?
Code 128 supports upper and lower case. Code 39 is limited to capital letters, so lower-case input is converted for you. The numeric formats accept digits only.
Is my data sent to your server?
No. The barcode is created by code running in your browser. The values you type aren't uploaded to our server. You can read more about how the site works on the About page and in the privacy policy.
