EAN-8 Barcode Generator

EAN-8 is a short, 8-digit retail barcode for packs that are too small for a full EAN-13. Enter 7 digits and we'll add the last one, or enter 8 and we'll check it.

Barcode type

Enter 7 digits and the check digit is added, or 8 digits to have it verified.

Your barcode will appear here.

Your barcode data is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to our server.

Size and appearance

The blank margin (quiet zone) is never smaller than 10 times the bar width, so the barcode stays scannable.

What is EAN-8?

EAN-8 is the small sibling in the EAN family. It carries a GTIN-8, which is seven digits plus a check digit. With fewer digits the printed symbol is a lot shorter than an EAN-13, and that's the whole point.

When EAN-8 makes sense

It's meant for products where a normal barcode simply won't fit, think lip balm, a chocolate bar or a small pharmacy item. If there's room for a full EAN-13, shops would rather you used that.

GS1 offices normally hand out 8-digit numbers only when a pack really is too small, so for products you plan to sell you usually can't pick your own. In North America the same space problem is often solved with UPC-E.

About product numbers and GS1

This site creates barcode images. It does not issue or register product numbers. Retailers and online marketplaces generally expect the GTIN, UPC or EAN on a product to be issued to your business by GS1, the standards organisation that manages these numbers, through its local member organisation. If you plan to sell products through retailers, obtain your numbers from GS1 first and then enter them here to create the barcode artwork. For testing, training, mock-ups and internal use, any correctly formed number will do.

EAN-8 questions

Can I convert an EAN-13 into an EAN-8?

No. An EAN-8 is its own number, not a shortened EAN-13. If you cut digits off a 13-digit number it no longer points to the same product.

How small can I print an EAN-8?

Retail barcodes are usually printed anywhere from 80% to 200% of the standard size. Print a test sheet and scan it with the same kind of scanner your retailer will use.

What happens if I type 8 digits and the last one is wrong?

It won't make the barcode. Instead it shows you the check digit that should have been there.
