Text QR Code Generator

Put any text in a QR code: a note, a serial number, a short message or an ID. When someone scans it, the text shows up on their phone.

A centre image hides part of the code, so error correction is set to High automatically. Keep logos simple and test the result with your phone. Your logo is used in your browser only and is never uploaded. Social media logos are trademarks of their owners: use them to point to your own profiles and follow each brand's guidelines.

Quiet zone is the blank border around the code, measured in squares. Keep it at 4 or more. Higher error correction survives more damage but makes a denser code.

What a text QR code does

A text QR code stores your words as they are. Most phone cameras show the text on screen after a scan, and some offer to search for it. Reading it doesn't need an internet connection, so it suits labels, inventory IDs, instructions and even treasure hunts.

Choosing text or something else

If your text is a web address, a URL QR code is better because phones will offer to open it. To start a chat, use a WhatsApp QR code, and for contact details a vCard QR code fits best.

If all you need is a short number or code on a label, a barcode might suit you better, since scanners in shops and warehouses are built for them.

How to create a Text QR code

  1. Fill in the details above (type your text).
  2. Check the preview and read any message under the fields. It explains how to fix anything that isn't valid.
  3. Open “Size, colours and error correction” if you want a different colour, size or error-correction level.
  4. Select Download PNG, Download SVG or Print. Files are named qr-code-text.png and qr-code-text.svg.

Before printing in volume, scan the code with two different phones. QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED.

Text QR Code questions

How much text can a QR code hold?

A QR code can technically hold thousands of characters, but dense ones are hard to scan. This tool stops at 1000, and for most uses a few lines is plenty.

Can I use accents or non-English characters?

Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8, so accents and many scripts work. A few older scanner apps may show unusual characters wrongly.

Will the text be visible to anyone who scans?

Yes, to anyone. A QR code isn't encrypted, so don't put secrets or passwords in one unless you're happy for everyone who sees it to read them.
