What is ITF-14?

ITF-14 identifies a trade item at carton or case level. It uses Interleaved 2 of 5, which encodes digits in pairs and is tough enough to print straight onto corrugated cardboard. You'll normally see a frame around it, called a bearer bar, which helps when the printing is a bit rough.

The number itself is a GTIN-14. The first digit says what packaging level it is, the next 12 usually come from the product's own number, and the last one is the check digit.

Where ITF-14 is used

  • Outer cartons and multipacks of retail products
  • Cases and shrink-wrapped bundles moving through warehouses and distribution centres

It isn't meant for items scanned at the checkout; single products use an EAN-13 or UPC-A. If you're only tracking your own cartons and want letters on the label too, Code 128 works better.

Printing tips for cartons

Cardboard soaks up ink and blurs thin bars, which is why ITF-14 uses wide bars and a bearer bar. Pick a larger bar width in the generator and print at 100% scale. Then scan the printed label with the same scanners your warehouse uses before you print a few thousand.

About product numbers and GS1

This site creates barcode images. It does not issue or register product numbers. Retailers and online marketplaces generally expect the GTIN, UPC or EAN on a product to be issued to your business by GS1, the standards organisation that manages these numbers, through its local member organisation. If you plan to sell products through retailers, obtain your numbers from GS1 first and then enter them here to create the barcode artwork. For testing, training, mock-ups and internal use, any correctly formed number will do.

ITF-14 questions

What does the first digit of an ITF-14 mean?

It's the packaging indicator in the GTIN-14, used to tell different packaging levels of the same product apart. Your GS1 office can explain how to assign it.

Do I need ITF-14 for my products?

Only if a distributor, retailer or logistics partner asks for GTIN-14 labels on cartons or cases. Single products use EAN-13 or UPC-A.

Why does the barcode have a frame around it?

That's the bearer bar. It's a normal part of an ITF-14 label and helps scanners read codes printed on rough surfaces.
